Albert Bouquillon (1908-1997)

Méditation

Patinated plaster.

France, 1965

A near life-size sculpture that combines a gentle humanism in it depiction of a seated woman with a sense of stylised monumentality reminiscent of Aristide Maillol and Picasso during his Classical period.

Bouquillon sculpted Meditation in 1965, this the patinated plaster version being the original. He then copied it in stone in 1968 and exhibited it at the Salon d’Asnieres in 1969 and the Paris Salon d’Automne in 1970.

Albert Bouquillon (Douai 1908– Paris 1997)

Bouquillon’s classical training culminated at the renowned École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He won the Grand Prix de Rome in 1934 and remained there until returning to Paris in 1938. His work was shown at the 1939 New York World Fair but otherwise he has remained almost entirely unknown outside France where he was well regarded, producing many public commissions and sitting on the board of the  Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts from 1960 to 1983.

A monograph, Albert Bouquillon. L’évolution figurative, Silvana Editoriale , was published in 2013 to accompany the retrospective held at the Musée de la Chartreuse de Douai.
