A George II Padouk Chest of Drawers

The carved and gilded ‘caddy’ top above four graduated drawers and a brushing slide.

England circa 1740

A rare early Georgian chest of drawers veneered in exotic padouk, the caddy shaped top with a carved and gilded edge, above a moulded oak slide and four graduated drawers, resting on a plinth base and bracket feet. Apparently retaining its original brass hardware.

This charming small scale chest is one of three known,  the others being in private English collections, of almost identical size and certainly from the same workshop. The present example is the only one with a brushing slide. The unusual carved and gilt edge to the top is seen on all three suggesting that it is original to them rather than a later embellishment
