A French ‘Shanghai Art Deco’ Paper Lantern
The frame painted in warm russet red with nine pierced and carved gilded panels backed with Japanese paper, supported by silk ties hanging from its original bronze corona.

The wonderfully decorative, richly modelled lantern in the 'Shanghai Art Deco' taste. The four sides and base with inset carved and gilded panels of stylised flowers and birds that, when lit, are silhouetted in the manner of traditional Chinese Tiehua iron work, which in turn references historical ink painting.
