A Pair of Club Chairs by Melchiore Bega

Italy, c 1930

A rare and very comfortable pair of armchairs by Melchiore Bega (1898-1976) with elegant lines, and tapering square solid wooden feet reupholstered in a pure wool boucle.

Melchiore Bega was a highly important figure in the Italian Modern movement of the 1930’s through to the 1960’s. An architect and designer, he was a friend and colleague of Gio Ponti, whose groundbreaking publication Domus he also edited from 1941 to 1944. Somewhat lesser known now than his contemporaries, he espoused a radical modernism tempered by a respect for pared-down classicism that many at the time found too avant-garde.

Amongst his numerous work in Italy and abroad the most notable are the Large Hotel in Cattolica (1939), Galfa Tower in Milan (1956), Palazzo INA Insurance in Milan, Palazzo dei Congressi in Bologna, Axel Springer in Berlin, Torre SIP in Genoa and Church of St. John the Baptist in Reno (Bologna).
