A polished cast iron stool
By Cricheley, Wright and Co. England Circa 1860
This rare Renaissance inspired X form stool was made between 1859 and 1861 by the partnership of George Wright, George Wilton Chambers and Henry Crichley, then based in Barton Mills, Sheffield.
Originally designed with a solid rail between the arms and a columnar back rest, as can be seen in the original patent drawing, it appears these were never put into production and instead the more sculptural form of the present stool was settled upon.
The legs are stamped with the diamond design registration mark corresponding to design number 119119, registered and patented on 28th March 1859.
