A pair of armchairs attr. to Leleu
France c. 1950
This exceptional pair of chairs are almost certainly by the Maison Leleu, from either the very end of the 1930’s or the very start of the 1950’s. Representing the highpoint of midcentury design, they successfully combine the perfect proportions of 18th century-inspired neo-classicism with almost avant-garde restraint of decoration.
Their tapering legs and attenuated stiles, which lead from the supremely elegant out-swept curving horseshoe of the back, give the design great poise and lightness. Their sophistication is confirmed by the success of the ergonomic design that cups the sitter’s back whilst the generous width at the front allows for freedom of movement.
